Abstract
of changing individuals' identities has undergone extensive changes. Given the importance of this issue, the purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of virtual social networks on the identity crisis of young people with an emphasis on cognitive components in the city of Tehran. The theoretical foundations of the variables and parameters of this study are based on the theories of Goffman and Castells. The method of this study is documentary, survey, and the statistical population of the present study is 183,659 people and its statistical sample is 393 people from a military university who were selected by multi-stage cluster sampling. The data collection tool is a questionnaire whose validity was examined by the face-content validity method and its reliability was confirmed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The results obtained indicate that the overall average of identity crisis in the studied society was (2.51 out of 5), which, considering that the minimum and maximum scores are 1 and 5, respectively, indicates that the identity crisis among individuals is at a low to moderate level. The regression results also indicate that in terms of beta coefficient, the following factors have the greatest impact on the identity crisis of individuals: the level of participation and activity in social networks, perception, level of use, ideas and beliefs, duration of membership, thinking, and education. Overall, the results of the regression analysis indicate that social networks and cognitive components explain a total of 56% of the variance in individuals' identity.
